Abstract

The digital transformation of innovation ecosystems has significantly reshaped the operational logic of industry-academia-research collaboration platforms. However, the theoretical foundation for how digital capabilities can be translated into measurable transformation efficiency remains insufficient. This paper synthesizes recently published empirical research, conceptual frameworks, and case studies, focusing on governance structures, resource allocation rules, and incentive mechanisms that influence the relationship between platform digitalization and commercialization outcomes. Several methodological limitations in the existing evidence base make claims about causality less convincing. This paper aims to construct a conceptual framework for platform designers and policymakers, while pointing out that platform effectiveness is influenced by industry characteristics and regional innovation culture. The discussion suggests that a context-sensitive research agenda should be developed, moving beyond static efficiency indicators to dynamically understand how collaboration platforms learn, adapt, and occasionally fail.
